Red Squirrel

It was a rather grey, chilly day, and this red squirrel looked like he wished he had his winter coat with him.  I know I did.
Over here, on the Isle of Wight, there are no grey squirrels; which is a relief for our native reds as greys can carry squirrel pox, a disease which shows no symptoms in greys yet is fatal for reds.  The population of reds here fluctuate, but there is enough woodland for 3,500 squirrels.  This is the first I've seen this year, and it made my day.

  1. Your so lucky to have a healthy population on the isle. I have only ever seen Red Squirrels on Brownsea Island in Dorset

  2. We are lucky, I agree. I saw one in Cornwall when I was a child, apart from that I've only seen them here on the island. Gorgeous animals. :)

  3. Lovely photo Omi - they are such beautiful animals. I've only ever seen them in the Lake District and just one sighting when we've been on the Isle of Wight (last year at Quarr Abbey).

    1. Thanks, Caroline :) They are special arn't they! And you always remember where you saw your first. It was a privilege to be with my son on this occasion (his first sighting), and watch his excitement. He got some smashing pictures, far better than mine, lol.
