A break in the clouds yesterday, had me reaching for my walking boots and field bag, and dashing out of the house before you could say, 'What about the washing up?' Each year, about this time, Island nature lovers are on the look out for the Glanville Fritillary. This stunning butterfly, once found as far north as Lincolnshire, is now mainly confined to the south coast. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed they were about, but they didn't settle very often and when they did it was frustratingly out of reach. Yesterday however, they were distracted, as you can see.
Below you can see the characteristic orange spots with black centres on the yellow post-discal band on the hind wings.
According to How To ID Butterflies by Richard Lewington, the male is lighter in build and colour than the female, which would make him the bottom one in my photo. You can have a guess at the sex while in flight (the butterlies, not you) as the male will patrol habitat edges looking for a mate, while the female generally lays low among the vegetation.

Excellent images and always nice to see this species.
ReplyDeleteThank you marmari :D I agree; another reason to love living on the Isle of Wight!
DeleteBrilliant photos Omi. We usually have a holiday on the Isle of Wight in June and every year without success I have looked for these lovely butterflies in the Compton Bay area! We won't be able to come this June so its lovely to see your photos and think that I may have been lucky this year:)
ReplyDeleteThanks Caroline :D It's a shame you didn't make it this year; they're busy making sure there will be more around next year though ;)
ReplyDeleteNice pics Omi. Hardly seen a butterfly and very few dragonflies this year, the weather in the SE has been, and still is appalling.
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil :) The weather is crazy isn't it? Such a shame for the wildlife and those of us wishing to study it. Thank you for the follow :)
DeleteThese are just gorgeous Omi!! I know I'm never likely to see them so will content myself with looking at your lovely photos. Actually, any butterflies would be welcome at the moment but no chance at the moment, we have has heavy rain all day long!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, it was a certain blogger called Phil (above) who was looking for someone to blame for the weather when you rather rapidly walked into his trap the other day ;-)
Thank you Jan :D You're so kind! Aha, Phil was it, oops! I was rather keen to take the blame, wasn't I! We have to get some sun again soon, surely! :/
